10 Step Guide To Your Best Room Makeover Ever

  1.  Take a bunch of photos of the room you want to redo.  Now look at these and write down what you see.  Is the scale wrong, the furniture too big or not big enough, not enough accessories, bad lighting, (see this post ) Why lighting is more important than furniture, no matter what your designer says not the proper window treatments, no flow?
  2. Make a list of the things you would like to change about the room.
  3. Start a mood board and collect items or rooms you do like from Pinterest.  Put lots of ideas on your mood boards.
  4. Make a list of the items in the room that you want to keep and those that need to find a new home.
  5. Take everything out of the room that you no longer want to keep.  Start sourcing the things you know has to be changed.
  6. Look around your home and see if you can repurpose items from another room to your new redo.  A print from your bedroom will look completely different in a new environment or a set of candlesticks or hurricane lamps can take on a new life  in a new area
  7. Is your home an open concept?  If so, you need to consider how the room you are updating will flow into the adjoining room.
  8. A coat of neutral paint will give you a fresh canvas to work with.  Your artwork, furniture and rugs can now be stars of the show.  Remember the 60/30/10 rule – 60 percent of the room should be a dominant color, 30 percent the secondary color and 10 percent an accent color
  9. Add new pillows and throws for warmth.  Use the 10 percent rule here.
  10. Don’t be afraid of going bigger with accessories, a few bigger items give a lot more impact.  Too many smaller items can look like clutter.

There you have it guys. Pick one room and follow these guidelines. You will have a beautiful room makeover in no time at all. You know you have done it right when every time you walk into that room it makes you smile and feel good to spend time there.
